Installing TSX-Lite
Installation of TSX-Lite is a simple process which takes about 10
minutes. The installation process will create the TSX-Lite system
directory, usually named TSX32SYS, on the destination disk. It
will extract the TSX-Lite system files from compressed libraries
and write them into this directory. The TSX kernel program,
TSX32.SYS, will be copied to the root directory of your C: drive.
When the installation is complete, your current directory will be
the TSX-Lite system directory on the destination drive. The TSX
installation process does not modify AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS.
The TSX-Lite operating system coexists peacefully on the same
computer with DOS. To start TSX-Lite you first boot DOS, then
change to the TSX-Lite system directory (usually named \TSX32SYS)
and issue the RUNTSX command.
See Section 1.13 on page 7 for information about obtaining
technical assistance.
1.1 Hardware Requirements
TSX-Lite requires a 386 or 486 based system with at least 4 MB of
memory. VGA and MDA display adapters are supported as well as a
variety of disk adapters. Disk compression schemes such as
DoubleSpace and Stacker are not supported.
1.2 Disk Space Requirements
After installation, the distributed files in the TSX-Lite system
directory will occupy approximately 5 Mb. In addition, the kernel
file, TSX32.SYS (which is always placed in the root of the C drive)
will require about 1 Mb.
However, when you start TSX, a virtual memory "page file" is
created in the TSX system directory which, by default, occupies 4
MB of disk space. The name of the page file is PAGEFILE.TSX and
its size is determined by the TSX system generation parameter
PGFILSIZ. The page file is used to hold the virtual memory portion
of programs that are not currently present in main memory. The
PGFILSIZ parameter is discussed in the TSX-Lite documentation. The
total required disk space for a running TSX-Lite system is roughly
10 megabytes.

1.3 Installation Modes
TSX-Lite is distributed both on floppy disks and via electronic
distribution. In either case, you will run an installation program
which will:
. Create the TSX-Lite directory on your hard disk.
. Decompress the TSX-Lite files into that directory.
. Ask you a series of questions about your system, and create a
configuration file based on your answers and what it can
automatically detect about your system.
1.4 Floppy Disk Installation
If you received TSX-Lite on floppy disks, you are ready to start
the installation. Simply insert Disk #1 in drive A or B and type
the command
x:INSTALL
where x is either A or B depending on which diskette drive you are
using.
Now proceed to Section 1.6 which describes the details of the
installation process.
When the installation is finished, the TSX-Lite documentation files
will be stored in the TSX32SYS directory. To print the
documentation, simply type PRINT *.DOC after booting TSX-Lite (the
TSXLITE.DOC manual is about 175 pages long).
1.5 Installation from ZIP Files
If you downloaded TSX-Lite from a bulletin board, you should have
four files with an extension of .ZIP. The first file in the series
contains the TSX-Lite documentation, and is much smaller than the
others. You may wish to download this file and read the
documentation before downloading and installing TSX-Lite.
You will have to "unzip" these files before running the
installation program. To do this, use the PKUNZIP utility program.
If you do not have a copy of PKUNZIP, you can download it from the
same bulletin board where you got TSX-Lite. Note, each of the four
.ZIP files contains a file named FILE_ID.DIZ. These files provide
descriptive information for bulletin boards but are not used by
TSX-Lite.
To unzip the files, create a temporary directory on your hard disk
and "CD" to that directory. Now, copy all .ZIP files to that
directory. Then, type the command

PKUNZIP -O *
You should now have the following files in the temporary directory
in addition to the ZIP files:

Now, simply type INSTALL to start the installation program. When
you have completed the installation, copy the documentation files
to another directory, or print them out with the TSX command
PRINT *.DOC.
You may then erase the files in the temporary directory.
1.6 The Installation Program
The Install program will display a Main Menu with the following
options:
Install TSX-Lite
Copy Individual Files
Exit
The first option, Install TSX-Lite, will be highlighted, and is the
appropriate one for all new systems and system upgrades. Press
Enter to select this option.
If you make an error any time during the installation process and
wish to exit, simply press Ctrl-X. You may then re-start the
installation.
If this is a new installation, the installation program will check
the system for adequate memory and disk space, and will check the
CONFIG.SYS file for possible device driver conflicts. The
following types of drivers many interfere with TSX-Lite when it
begins running: Extended memory managers such as QEMM.SYS and
HIMEM.SYS; disk caching programs such as SMARTDRV.SYS; disk
compression programs such as DBLDISK.SYS and Stacker.
If your system contains multiple hard disks, the program will then
display a menu of available drives for you to select where you wish
to install TSX-Lite. Use the cursor keys or press the letter of
the drive you select, then press Enter. The selected drive should
have at least 11 Megabytes free. The hard drive choices are as
follows:

. Standard AT - This is the most common catagory of disk
controller, and includes ISA-bus, EISA-bus, and IDE controllers
as well as ESDI and MFM/RLL. If in doubt, select this option.
. Adaptec 1540 SCSI - Includes the 1542 and compatibles, and the
EISA 1742 in standard mode.
. Adaptec 1740 SCSI/Enhanced mode - Select when using the 1742
controller in enhanced mode.
. Western Digital 7000 SCSI - This includes the FAAST family of
controllers for ISA and EISA machines.
. Unisys/Convergent SCSI - a proprietary controller found only on
Unisys machines.
. Standard PS/2 - This is the standard controller provided with
most IBM PS/2 machines.
. PS/2 SCSI - This is the IBM SCSI controller for the PS/2.
You will now be asked a series of questions to determine whether
certain detached jobs should be started at system bootup. The jobs
which may be started are the print spooler and the window print
facility. Reply "Y" for each job your system will require. These
selections can be changed later by using the TSGEN program. If in
doubt about an option the safest choice is "Y".
The installation program will now begin extracting files from
compressed libraries and copying them to your selected hard disk.
Please do not interrupt this process until it is finished.
After all files are copied, the installation process will create a
file named TSX32.GEN in your TSX-Lite system directory with
information about your configuration and choice of options. Then,
the TSGEN program will run, applying the GEN options to the kernel
file, C:\TSX32.SYS. The TSX-Lite manual explains how you can use
TSGEN to customize and optimize TSX-Lite for your needs.
The installation procedure checks for the presence of the COM1 and
COM2 serial ports and defines them as TSX devices TTB0 and TTC0 if
they are present. See the TSXLITE.DOC file for information about
setting up COM3 and COM4 ports.
1.7 Starting TSX-Lite
Since TSX-Lite is an operating system and must have full access to
the computer when it starts running, some TSR programs or DOS
device drivers may interfere with it. In particular, you should
remove any of the following programs and/or drivers from your
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and reboot before starting
TSX-Lite:

. Memory managers such as QEMM.SYS and HIMEM.SYS. TSX-Lite has
its own virtual memory manager built into it.
. Disk compression schemes such as Stacker or DoubleSpace. Note:
TSX-Lite does NOT support disk compression and if you have
compressed your disks you will need to decompress before
starting TSX-Lite.
. Disk caching programs such as SMARTDRV.SYS.
When the installation procedure completes, make sure your current
directory is the TSX-Lite system directory (normally TSX32SYS) and
type RUNTSX to start TSX. A screen will appear displaying the
progress of the bootup process. When system initialization is
finished (it takes 15 to 30 seconds), you will see the TSX-Lite
greeting and a system prompt. To return to DOS, type the TSX
"SHUTDOWN" or "BOOT" commands.
If the TSX-Lite start-up process fails, save a copy of your
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, create minimal ones without any
TSR's or unnecessary device drivers, reboot, and then try to start
TSX-Lite again. See Section 1.12 for solutions to some possible
problems.
1.8 Using TSX-Lite
When TSX-Lite starts it prints a welcome message and then displays
a command prompt. At this point you may type TSX commands or run
your own application programs. You may want to try a few of the
following commands to get a feeling for the system: "TSXSHELL",
"HELP", "SYSMON", "FMAN", "SHOW SYSTEM", "SHOW USE", "SHOW
TERMINALS", "SHOW MEMORY", "SHOW PAGING", "SHOW CACHE", "SHOW
FILES", "SHOW FSTATUS", "SHOW ERRORS".
1.9 Documentation Files
The following documentation files are provided with TSX-Lite. See
the REGISTER.DOC file for information about purchasing other
manuals.

1.10 System Upgrades
The installation program will detect if TSX is already installed on
the target drive. If so, you will not be asked the questions
mentioned above and the new files will simply be copied over the
old ones.

Certain files which are considered "user-specific" will not be
overwritten. These include the GEN file, startup command files,
etc. A list of these files will appear on the screen (see the
following section for a complete list). If you wish any of these
files to be replaced, press Ctrl-X to exit, delete the file(s),
then restart the installation program.
1.11 Copy Individual Files Installation Option
Use this option to copy one or more selected files from the
distribution disks. Because files are stored on the distribution
disks in compressed format, they cannot be copied to your system
with the COPY command.
When you select this option, you will be prompted for the name of a
file to copy. Type the filename and extension only, with no drive
or directory specification. Press Enter to continue. You will now
be prompted for another file to copy. You may continue to enter as
many files as you wish in this way. Wildcard filenames are
acceptable.
Simply press Enter without entering a filename when you are done.
All files you selected will now be copied to the TSX-Lite directory
on your system. If you asked for the file TSX32.SYS, it will be
copied to the root directory on drive C:.
Certain files are known by the Installation program to be
user-modifiable. The Installation program will not copy these
files to your hard disk if another file with the same name already
exists. To get a new copy of these files, you must first erase the
original copy. The files in this category are as follows:
START.CMD
LSTARTUP.CMD
LSHUTDOWN.CMD
STARTQUE.CMD
QINIT.CMD
E32.INI
KERMIT.INI
*.KEY
1.12 Possible Installation Problems
1. During the installation process, a message appears of the form
"We had a problem reading a file." This indicates a corrupted
compressed distribution library file. Please obtain a new
distribution.
2. During the execution of the TSGEN program (immediately after
the installation program "farewell" screen), an "out of memory"
message appears. TSGEN requires a substantial amount of DOS
memory. It cannot use EMS or XMS. Remove all drivers and

TSR's from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, reboot, and
try again.
3. The TSX boot process fails with a message of the form "error
opening keyboard monitor." This indicates that TSX is having
trouble finding its files on the hard disk. Run the TSGEN
program, select "Set Tuning Parameters", then select "All
Parameters". Press the letter "S" and scroll down to the
parameter SYSDEV, then press enter. This parameter tells TSX
where its files are stored.
The disk drive is specified as DHxy: where 'x' indicates the
disk (a letter) and 'y' indicates a partition on that disk (a
number). So, for example, the C drive is always DHA0:. The D
drive may be either DHA1: if it is the 2nd partition on the
first disk, or DHB0: if it is the 1st partition on the second
disk. Verify that the SYSDEV parameter contains the correct
disk name. See the TSX-Lite documentation for more information
on running the TSGEN program.
4. The boot process fails with a message of the form "Error moving
data" or "Error allocating memory." This usually indicates a
conflict with a DOS memory manager or device driver. Try
removing all such drivers from the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
files and rebooting the computer. If the problems persist, try
running the CMOS setup program for your computer and disabling
all ROM and video shadowing.
5. The boot process completes successfully and the greeting
message appears on the screen, but the system appears to be
"dead." This symptom may occur when TSX has had a problem
initializing the keyboard. Reboot the computer and run the
TSGEN program. Select "Set Tuning Parameters", then select
"Console Keyboard Parameters". Increase the value of KBDELAY1,
KBDELAY2, KBDELAY3, and KBDELAY4 to 30000 (thirty thousand).
Exit TSGEN and try running TSX again. See the TSX-Lite
documentation for more information on running the TSGEN
program.
6. The screen goes blank after entering the RUNTSX command to
start TSX. TSX is having a problem with your video adapter.
Try setting the adapter to its most basic mode and try booting
again.
1.13 Telephone Support
